Kathryn Sievers joined the viola section of the Boston Symphony in February 2018 after playing frequently with the orchestra as a substitute musician for ten years. During her freelance career, Kathryn also performed many times with the Cleveland Orchestra, Philadelphia Orchestra, Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, and Santa Fe Opera.
Kathryn was born in Boston and grew up in the Marshall Islands. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in English literature from Yale, a Master of Music from the Juilliard School, and studied with Robert Vernon at the Cleveland Institute of Music. Influential teachers include Heidi Castleman, Misha Amory, and Erick Friedman. As a Fellow at the New World Symphony in Miami Beach Kathryn was featured as soloist in the Bartok viola concerto.
Kathryn has been a passionate teacher since she began her professional career in high school with a small private studio of violin students in the Marshall Islands. She particularly enjoys coaching students who are preparing for professional auditions and has developed a website of resources for advanced students looking to refine professional skills.
Kathryn serves the Boston Symphony Orchestra as delegate to the International Conference of Symphony and Opera Musicians. Through an organization called Partakers she also serves as a mentor to an incarcerated student enrolled at Tufts through the Tufts University Prison Initiative.
When she is not performing Kathryn likes to garden, read, look at birds, study maps, solve crossword puzzles, and converse. She is an avid supporter of the Oxford Comma.
